Vis Awards 2010 - the shortlist

Games Programming Award - for the best example of the art of programming for the creation and control of a real-time games sequence or demo.

Games Design Award - for the best playable game prototype using the appropriate development software and accompanied with a design pitch using presentation software to demonstrate complete game vision using no more than 20 slides.

Character Animation Award - for the best character animation sequence realised with 2D or 3D software.

Digital Music Award - for the best and most innovative use of technology and techniques for the creation and digital production of a music composition.

Collect your ticket
If you have entered into this year’s Vis Awards, your ticket to the awarding ceremony and networking event is now available to collect from the School of Computing reception desk and must be collected before Friday 30 April. Spare tickets will be available from the reception desk after 30 April on a first come first served basis. This year’s event will take place at The Hub in the Students’ Union on Wednesday 5 May, from 4.00pm.
Ubisoft workshops
To coincide with this years Vis Awards deadline date - Friday 16 April, representatives from Ubisoft Games Studio will be visiting Teesside Uni to host two workshops in support this years modelling and character animation categories. Lead Animator Joe Money will be delivering a workshop on Tuesday 13 April. Games Designer Mark Sample will be delivering his workshop on Thursday 15th April.

Newcastle music studio sponsor the Digital Music Award

Loft Music, a Newcastle based studio that produces music for advertising, TV, film, video games and record labels has agreed to become a sponsor in the 2009 Vis Awards. Loft Music offers a unique catalogue of music from a growing stable of new and established global artists. On offer is a unique opportunity to work alongside an established group of musicians that has produced material for clients that include Electronic Arts, Channel 4, Sony, Warner, Nike, Nintendo and Sega.
New CBeebies initiative launched

Do you have a film idea that you would like to present to CBeebies? If you do, submit your one page proposal via the Vis Awards on-line application procedure before Tuesday 21 April, 2009 deadline. Successful applicants will be invited to meet with representatives of the CBeebies team that will include Nicole Seymour, Senior Interactive Producer, Daniel Bays, Development Producer and Jackie Edwards, Cbeebies Acquisitions Manager, at the Centre for Enterprise on Tuesday 5 May 2009. Recipients of this award will be announced at the Vis Awards ceremony and networking event that is being held at mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) later that evening.
See your work on the big screen?

To coincide with the Vis Awards party that is scheduled to take place at mima (Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art) on Tuesday 5 May 2009, there will be a special screening of student work in Albert Square, where it will be projected on to the 25 metre LED screen.

The Vis Awards now has a Twitter and a Facebook presence for those of you who want to receive news about the competition as it happens. If you want to be kept up to date with new categories, sponsors, events and general happenings behind the event then visit our Twitter site.

Do you need some advice?

If you're thinking of submitting your work into the 2009 Vis Awards and you have any questions that you would like to put to the Ubisoft team directly, you can do so by signing up to the Vis Awards forum. Ubisoft have agreed to provide support for students who are considering entering into the Computer Games Design, Modelling, Character Animation and Games Programming awards. This support is restricted to School of Computing students will be available until the deadline on 21 April.

Following on from the guest lecture on Wednesday 18 February which was attended by representatives of Ubisoft, animation lead notes to support this lecture have been made available on the Vis Awards forum.

Giselle Stewart and staff from Ubisoft will be giving a guest lecture entitled How To Get In To The Games Industry on Wednesday 18 February, starting at 2pm. Together with talking about what Ubisoft are looking for in a winning Vis Awards application, Giselle and her team will also be looking for students for undergraduate work placements.
Ubisoft Internships

The Vis Awards are pleased to announce that Ubisoft Reflections are offering 4 x 6 month internships for Teesside students taking part in the 2009 competition. Together with an annual salary of £14,000 (pro-rata), Ubisoft will also be providing a monthly travel card to help with the travel costs to and from work. For more information, together with advice on how to present yourself and your work there will be an opportunity to attend a guest lecture that will be a hosted by a representative of Ubisoft.
