Specialist courses

  • Health informatics - in conjunction with the School of Computing, we have developed three short introductory modules covering data analysis, data management and database systems for healthcare. These have been designed with the needs of commissioning and support staff in mind, but may be equally useful for others to support informatics skills.
  • Practical palliative care for general practitioners and prescribers - is designed with the specific purpose of empowering practitioners to improve their practice of palliative and end-of-life care, and has been designed to be within the scope of busy clinicians.
  • ECG interpretation for general practitioners - has been developed to meet local cardiac network requirements and supports general practitioners in developing their knowledge of evidence-based ECG interpretation. The course materials are delivered online allowing busy practitioners to fit study in around their daily workload.
  • How to handle the media - is for both new entrants to a PR or a marketing team and for executives or managers who come into contact with the media. It covers both proactive PR and dealing with the media in a crisis. It is practical in nature, giving an understanding of how journalists think and behave.
  • Leading children's social care: protecting vulnerable children - the first leadership development programme for children's social care specifically designed to equip you to step up to the demands of this critical role and enhance your ability to respond to strategic challenge. Teesside University is the exclusive provider of the LCSC programme in the North East.
  • Leading effective teams: a programme for social care team managers - LET is a six-month programme designed to enhance the leadership skills of those charged with the complex task of delivering children's social care. Teesside University is the exclusive provider of the LET programme in the North East.
  • Online video journalism - is a master's-level course designed for those in PR and communications departments to gain an understanding of how to produce online video news.
  • Leading roles - uses theatre-based performance masterclasses to explore critical business issues, such as leading change, dealing with conflict, emotional intelligence or performance management, driving innovation and responding to current challenges.
  • Anthronomics - promotes, supports and develops high-quality research on health and social care topics in partnership with external groups and bodies. Our Health and Social Care Institute has a particular interest in rehabilitation science and public health.

Research, evaluation and audit

  • Centre for Health and Social Evaluation. CHASE is a high-quality facility, providing evaluation and research expertise for agencies delivering health, education and social care.
  • Health and Social Care Institute - specialises in teaching and research of skeletal anatomy using a combination of traditional teaching, hands-on sessions and their unique Dactyl range of 3D digital bone models. Their services are aimed at anyone who works with the skeleton in some form, from clinicians and medical practitioners to physiotherapists and those performing massage.

Service improvement and excellence in practice accreditation scheme

Service improvement supports and empowers practitioners and managers to build their competence and confidence, enabling them to lead and manage service improvement and the implementation of new legislation across the health and social care practice and organisational spectrum. Use of teaching facilities

  • Dental training facilities - are located in our award-winning Centuria South building. Facilities available to hire include general training rooms as well as specialist dental training facilities such as phantom heads, 18-bay clinic setting and medical imaging room.
  • Technical/teaching facilities - the School of Health & Social Care has a wide variety of high specification technical teaching equipment ranging from biomechanics assessment to clinical skills training, with a wide range of SimMan and other teaching models. These facilities are available to hire to other organisations who need equipment of this standard to deliver training.
  • Hydrotherapy pool - built as part of Teesside University's £17m investment in health and sport science facilities, the hydrotherapy pool provides an optimal environment for patients and athletes who require supported exercise as part of a rehabilitation or training programme.
