About Gillian Janes

Gillian has 16 years’ nursing experience as a clinician, manager and clinical mentor in a range of specialities and settings, plus a short period as lecturer/practitioner and experience running her own business.

Gillian has a BSc (Hons) Professional Studies in Healthcare, a master's in advancing practice and a postgraduate certificate for learning and teaching in higher education. She entered higher education full time in 2001 as a senior lecturer at Teesside. Teaching predominantly leadership and service improvement across all health and social care disciplines, she has had varied experience of module and programme leadership, new programme development and learning and teaching innovation at a range of academic levels.

She is a licensed Myers-Briggs Personality Type Indicator (MBTI) practitioner and accredited NHS Leadership Qualities Framework (LQF) feedback facilitator. Her learning and teaching interests include the impact of learning in the work place, action learning, action research, inter-disciplinary education and academic leadership. She led cross curricular learning and teaching innovation, embedding service improvement education in initial clinical education programmes across the School of Health & Social Care and contributed nationally as a member of the National Reference Group for Service Improvement.

Gillian is an external examiner and has undertaken external consultancy work on curriculum design and innovation as well as the staff development activities to support this. Gillian is a University Teaching Fellow and past fellow of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (CETL4HealthNE). She took up her current post as Learning and Teaching Consultant in March 2009.

Research interests and activities

Gillian’s research interests include: enabling service improvement, action learning, work based learning, academic leadership and leadership development.
