Dawn Blenkin

About Dawn Blenkin

Dawn is a Senior Lecturer in occupational therapy and joined the team in July 2009. She qualified in 2002 after studying at St Martins College in Lancaster and has worked in a variety of settings spanning both physical and mental health. Her experiences of OT include orthopaedics, care of the elderly, neurology, inpatient adult mental health, community adult mental health and vascular conditions, but predominantly her expertise is community physical rehabilitation and intermediate care. Dawn has a number of qualifications including BSc (Hons) Occupational Therapy, MA in Education and she became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy in February 2016.

Dawn has been actively involved in practice placement education, leading the practice placement team for the occupational therapy programmes from 2009 to 2016. She was involved in a variety of forums and committees relating to practice education at regional and national levels. Placement related achievements include devising and implementing a model for increasing placement capacity. Dawn is currently the Exams Officer for the occupational therapy programmes at Teesside University hence her involvement with placements has been reduced. Dawn teaches on both the undergraduate BSc and MSc programmes at Teesside University and has international learning and teaching experience in Malaysia, Switzerland and India. Dawn is also an Associate Tutor for the PGCE learning and teaching in higher education and delivers occasional sessions for the comics, graphic novels and sequential art degree in relation to movement analysis.

Dawn has a number of other roles, including being a social media champion, promoting the benefits and pitfalls of social media and its use as professional. Externally Dawn is a Visitor for the HCPC, assessing programmes of education delivered by other higher education providers. As a HCPC Visitor she provides expert advice and contributes to discussions and decision making to the HCPC Education and Training Committee. Dawn also holds the role of CQC Specialist Advisor. This role involves input into the Care Quality Commissions regulatory inspection and investigation activity.

As the columnist for The OT Magazine Dawn is an established writer, providing ongoing advice and guidance directed at students’ relating to a number of learning and teaching related areas.

Research interests and activities

Dawns research for her MA Education was 'Service User and Carer Involvement in an Occupational Therapy Curriculum'. This was presented at the College of Occupational Therapists Conference in 2015.

Future research interests involve examining how students with disabilities are supported in Higher Education and how this compares to support in professional practice.   

Enterprise interest and activities

Dawn has a number of interest areas but has predominantly focused on the use of non-traditional / role emerging placements to promote occupational therapy and to increase employability for occupational therapy students. Dawn  has presented at a number of learning and teaching conferences and The Royal College of Occupational Therapy Conference in relation to role emerging and non traditional placements.

Dawn supports the charity 'Candle for India' and provides extra curricula learning opportunities for occupational therapy students and teachers at the Deepti Centre in Adoor, India.
