Nursing

Full-time study structure and content

Teesside offers the following pathways: Adult Nursing, Child Nursing, Learning Disabilities Nursing or Mental Health Nursing.

All programmes consist of 50% theory and 50% practice in a health environment. For BSc (Hons) and diploma students the hours of attendance are 34½ hours per week for practice and and 37 hours for theory weeks. The MSc hours vary. All students must complete 4,600 hours as part of NMC requirements for registration.

Each pathway prepares you to work as part of a team as well as independently and to care for people from a wide range of social and cultural backgrounds. Although you choose a particular pathway, there are opportunities to find out more about the other nursing pathways.

During the first year, you gain skills and knowledge in a range of areas, including nursing theory, practical nursing skills, human physiology, health promotion, ethics, professional studies, interpersonal skills, sociology, psychology and cultural issues. If you are on the degree course you'll find there is more emphasis on developing research skills. Practice placements begin early in the first year and continue throughout both courses.

In the second and third years you share some modules across pathways but the majority are specific to your chosen pathway. Placements in the second and third years reflect this growing specialisation.

Assessment

There are several assessments you need to pass before you can continue with your studies. These include essays, exams and presentations. You will also be assessed in practice and will build up a portfolio of evidence.

Part-time study structure and content

The part-time programme consists of three phases over 4 - 4½ years and you study in the University or attend practice placement. Each phase is designed to ensure your time is split 50% in practice and 50% in theory. Days and time of attendance vary according to the modules being studied.
