'I came to an open day, and the whole experience made it feel homely and welcoming.'

Why Teesside University?

I found out about Teesside through a family friend. I came to an open day, and the whole experience made it feel homely and welcoming.

I always wanted a career working with people. I initially wanted to study paramedic science but I didn’t manage to get on the course, then I found out about the human biology degree through Clearing. I decided to join and it was the best decision I ever made – I feel this course is a better fit for me and has opened up wider career options.

Tell us about your course

We have a lot of contact time in laboratories, learning new skills and gaining hands-on experience. This is useful to learn and help me understand the theory. We’re assessed through various ways, including practical sessions, coursework and written exams. We’ve also been able to work with students from different subjects during group week projects.

My favourite modules have been Cell Biology and Microbiology because they are really hands-on in the labs. This has become a major interest of mine and I would like to follow it as a career.

What do you think about the campus and services offered?

The campus is wonderful. It has everything you need for study, socialising and developing yourself. There are always staff and advisers available on campus if you ever need help with anything.

I stayed in student accommodation in my first year in Central Halls. The building was well kept and very safe. There were regular fire alarm checks and lovely staff on-hand 24/7. It’s the best place to meet new people and develop friendships.

What has your social life been like?

The social side is amazing. There is always something going on, on campus or throughout the University. I’ve met many people from all age groups and across different year groups at Teesside. Middlesbrough itself has lots of places to shop – everything is available within a 15 minute walk. At the moment, I’m also helping to set up a new club at the Students’ Union – a rounders team.

Would you recommend Teesside University and your course?

I would. It provides a range of careers available in science, and the course can be tailored to what you want it to be. All staff are on-hand if you need them and they are supportive. The content of the course is detailed and interesting, covering a wide range of topics.
