A first-class degree from Teesside helped Samantha to start a career with Boots.

BSc (Hons) Crime Scene Science

'I would absolutely recommend the Crime Scene Science course as the lecturers and facilities are second to none.'

What drew you to study Crime Scene Science at Teesside?

I watched an episode of CSI when I was just starting secondary school and decided I wanted to be involved in forensics. I had heard that the Crime Scene Science course at Teesside was one of the best courses in the country, and Teesside was my first and only choice of university because the Crime Scene Science course sounded so great.

What was the course like?

I would absolutely recommend the Crime Scene Science course as the lecturers and facilities are second to none. There is a Vehicle Examination Lab and two Crime Scene Houses – and lecturers who have an array of skills and experience, as well as being hugely supportive and approachable – I couldn’t have asked to be part of a better place. I graduated with a First.

The social aspects of Teesside are also great – the Hub and the Student Union were destinations to go to every week and have a great time. I was initially worried about leaving the south of England and moving to somewhere completely different. However, Middlesbrough is a great city with very friendly people, a fantastic night life and a busy town centre.

What did you do next?

I was interviewed by Boots even before I had finished my final exams and I got a job as Commercial Trading Assistant for over-the-counter medicines, pain relief and children’s medicines, at Boots’ head office in Nottingham. I have been doing well here ever since. I love my job and am excited by the prospect that I can develop and be stretched through career progression within the company.

Without my degree I would not have been offered this job. I learned skills such as time keeping, organisation and self discipline and they are highly valued by employers. My First also showed my employer that I was very ambitious and willing to work hard to get what I want.
