Our state-of-the-art facilities offer a first class learning environment for students. We have the largest crime scene house in a British University, as well as a police station, mock court room and digital evidence laboratory.
Mock courtroom
This is an exact replica of one of the courtrooms at Teesside Combined Court. It can be set up to simulate family, crown or magistrates' court hearings. The facility allows proceedings to be transmitted over the web, enabling question and answer sessions via a video conferencing unit.
Police station
This includes a custody area, examination room, front desk and an interview room.
Crime scene house
We have the largest crime scene house to be found in a British university. Inside are over 30 crime scene areas - lounges, kitchens, master bedrooms, children's bedrooms and bathrooms. There is also a fire scene, clothes shop, bar and travel agents.
Other scenes can extend beyond the confines of the house to a rear yard and grassed area. The house has a briefing room equipped with all the necessary teaching aids, including closed circuit television which enables staff and students to observe and record work in progress.

Forensic science laboratories
Our laboratories provide facilities to undertake examinations ranging from general exhibits to complex biological, chemical and physical analyses. They are equipped with a full range of optical microscopes, including a specialist comparison microscope and two scanning electron microscopes.
Together with equipment to undertake biological investigations, including the production of DNA profiles, the laboratories cater for specialist examinations with apparatus which allow for the chemical enhancement of fingerprints, the examination of questioned documents and the determination of physical characteristics such as the refractive index of glass.
Vehicle examination laboratory
This facility allows you to develop and practise your photographic, forensic and fingerprinting skills during the examination of 10 complete vehicles. It enables important research activity to be carried out and has been used to study techniques such as the effectiveness of using superglue to recover fingerprints from vehicles.
Digital evidence laboratory
This laboratory has 30 workstations and 60 computers. State-of-the-art software and hardware for computer and mobile phone examination has been installed to provide the most realistic environment possible. The laboratory is available for training courses, workshops, case work investigations and conferences.
