National Horizons Centre

For businesses

The NHC is focused on:

  • delivering a responsive portfolio of outstanding technical, leadership and digital education and training, based on a deep understanding of recruitment and retention needs to support workforce planning
  • growing an internationally competitive applied research community with access to world-class facilities, collaborating with industry to solve business challenges
  • forming mutually beneficial research and innovation partnerships with businesses and key intermediaries to accelerate innovation and productivity growth.

A range of training, short courses and professional programmes developed in partnership with industry are designed to address technical, leadership, and digital skills gaps in the UK biosciences sector. With tailored leadership programmes for middle and senior managers a significant feature, a key initiative is Powering Growth in the Biosciences Sector, a Teesside University programme funded by the Office for Students to develop leadership and management as well as technical continuing professional development for the industry.

Partnership working with the industry is key to ensuring that industry is able to recruit and develop the workforce it needs.

Our undergraduate and postgraduate programmes are designed to produce a talent pipeline ready for the workplace, incorporating practical hands-on experience of equipment, project and work experience, and the entrepreneurial and soft skills that are so much in demand from employers. Degree apprenticeships are a growing offer for the NHC, with the Laboratory Scientist Degree Apprenticeship already well under way with local employers, and others in active development.

Courses link to the specialist equipment and facilities, teaching and research areas within the NHC scope.

'We're delighted that the NHC will be co-located in the Tees Valley. As one of the world's leading biopharmaceutical contract development and manufacturing organisations, the development and training of our people is central to all that we do.

The NHC on our doorstep will allow us to access best-in-class training and development opportunities for our staff, and for potential recruits to also accumulate the skills and know how needed to be successful in our day-to-day business.'

Industry research, innovation and knowledge exchange

Teesside University has an excellent track record for working with business, and the NHC will build on this work through its industry networks. An intensive engagement programme will bring student and graduate talent, academic expertise, research and business know-how to support individual bioscience companies with knowledge exchange collaborations.

The centre's state-of-the-art analytical and digital infrastructure will support basic and applied research in the biosciences and across disciplinary boundaries, aligned to academic excellence and industry needs.

NHC will be the home for major collaborations such as THYME, an innovative partnership between Teesside, York and Hull Universities, funded by Research England. THYME will build on world-class regional bioeconomy assets to drive increased productivity among companies operating in the North's bioeconomy through a range of industry-led initiatives. Projects already underway include entrepreneurship training for researchers with spin-out ideas and the development of a biosimulator, delivering computer-aided mathematical simulation of biological processes and systems, for the NHC.

Digital and data science expertise underpins research and manufacturing. The NHC will enable businesses to grow the digital capability within their workforce, harnessing data analysis, modelling and simulation techniques, and virtual and artificial reality to achieve significant productivity gains.
