About | STEMulate12 - Year 12 Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics Discovery Day

STEMulate12 provides Year 12 students studying science, technology, engineering or mathematics (STEM) subjects the opportunity to experience practical applications of these topics in a university laboratory setting and also an opportunity to receive career guidance on these subjects.

Sessions require students to draw on knowledge from topics they have covered in their Year 12 curriculum for practical problem solving. By applying theory in a real laboratory setting, they gain a better understanding of the theory and its relevance to solving problems.

Students will chose two of the following workshops to complete on the day:
• Aerospace engineering: aircraft performance and flight characteristics
• Biological/biomedical sciences: microscopy and histology
• Biosciences: DNA gel electrophoresis
• Chemical engineering: heat exchange systems used in the chemical processing industry
• Civil engineering: fluid mechanics and hydraulics in open channels
• Computer and digital forensics: code breaking
• Food science and nutrition: creating a healthy smoothie
• Forensic and crime scene investigation: specialist forensic recovery techniques for latent fingerprints and traces of blood
• Instrumentation and control engineering: using a thermistor to design, build and test an instrument to measure temperature
• Mathematics: an exploration of how mathematics can be used to solve real-world problems
• Mechanical engineering: evaluating the strength of materials and viscosity of fluids
• Renewable energies: the fuel cell car challenge
