Paul Sargent

About Paul Sargent

Paul is an academic in geotechnical engineering.  He lectures in modules including ‘Geotechnology and Materials’ and ‘Advanced Geotechnics’ in the MEng (Hons) and MSc Civil Engineering programmes.

Paul graduated with an MSci (Hons) in Geological Sciences from Durham University, followed by an MSc in Engineering Geology at Newcastle University.  He then went on to complete his PhD in Geotechnical Engineering, also at Newcastle University.  After completing his PhD, Paul worked as a Geotechnical Engineer for the international engineering / infrastructure consultancy AECOM for over three years.  Examples of projects he has worked on include A1 Leeming to Barton improvement, Morpeth Northern Bypass, HS2, Farnley Haugh landslide (Corbridge) and the Trafford Park Line extension of the Metrolink in Manchester.  Paul is also a Fellow of the Geological Society of London and has won numerous paper competition awards based on his PhD research.

His research interests include the application of low carbon geopolymers and grouts for use in ground improvement, cyclic and dynamic behaviour of soils and rocks, creep behaviour and soil-structure interaction.  Paul has a growing international publication record and has reviewed papers for journals including Engineering Geology and Construction and Building Materials.
