What made you decide to go to university?
I chose to go to university as I have a passion for learning and in particular theory and research. I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to follow my passion for knowledge.
Why did you choose Teesside?
I chose Teesside as I knew that it would be important for me to have a strong support network around me due my disability (dyslexia and osteoarthritis-rheumatoid arthritis), and I felt that Teesside would offer me the support I need to succeed.
The human mind and behaviour has always been of interest to me and I chose my course as it’s largely research and theory based, which I really enjoy. Psychology has philosophical and sociological roots which are topics that also greatly interest me.
What has been your favourite module?
The module I’ve enjoyed the most is my dissertation, as it comes with increased academic autonomy and gives you the chance to look deeper into certain phenomena and possibly use this knowledge to inform policy and practice, positively influencing the lives of others.
How would you describe Teesside?
Teesside is an exciting place to study and can provide students with outstanding opportunities. It has a warm, supportive and encouraging atmosphere, embracing people from all different backgrounds.
The support offered by the University has been great, allowing me to continue with my studies after a period of ill health. I access specialist study skills support, which has helped me to understand my disability and given me strategies and support in my sessions.
Have you done any placements?
I have a keen interest in neuroscience, neurodegeneration and genetics and I did a placement at Newcastle University where I studied neuropathology. This gave me the opportunity to increase my knowledge of the subject area and decide which route to take in the future.
What are your ambitions for the future?
I plan to continue my studies and progress onto the MSc Health Psychology and Clinical Skills course at Teesside. After that I hope to undertake a PhD around improving and understanding person-centred care in dementia settings, and possibly move into lecturing at the University while researching my area of interest.
