Environmental chamber

Our environmental chamber can range from temperatures of -20 degrees to 40 degrees Celsius, with variable humidity of 0-100%, meaning that we can replicate almost any climate an athlete is likely to encounter in competition. In addition, we also have a hypoxic generator which allows us to simulate competition or exercise at high altitude.

The environmental chamber can be booked in 60 minute slots and is equipped with kit to cater for a variety of sports including cycling, rowing, running and combat sports.

We offer use of the environmental chamber for £60 per hour. The chamber is big enough to cater for 2 athletes at a time.

We can also offer bespoke testing packages based on the demands of your sport – previously this has led to the development of a motocross specific testing package.

Hydrotherapy pool

The hydrotherapy pool is a unique facility, built as part of Teesside University’s £17m investment in health and sport science facilities. The pool provides an optimal environment for patients and athletes who require supported exercise as part of a rehabilitation or training program.

Benefits of using the hydrotherapy pool include:

  • non-weight bearing training to accelerate injury recovery times
  • water buoyancy reduces bodyweight by about 70% – reducing the load on joints and tendons
  • train in the swimming flume against variable resistance jets; or use the underwater treadmill to aid recovery from a hard training week.

Features include:

  • appropriate depths for swimming, walking and running
  • variable speed underwater treadmill, swimming flume with resistance jets.
  • variable temperature to suit different activities
  • video analysis.

We also offer comprehensive sports performance and rehabilitation facilities and expertise, for just £30 per hour. The pool is big enough to cater for small groups.

We also offer specialist services through teessidesportsinjury.co.uk

Testimonials for the Sport Science Service

Stacey Smith - Great Britain 1,500m runner

'The facilities at Teesside University have been a key aspect to my training and progression. I have found V02 max testing and blood sampling key to my performance as an athlete. The continuous monitoring gives me information on whether I’m training effectively, training to hard or not enough. Physiological testing allows me to identify my fitness levels at important times of the season and adapt my training in order to continue improving.'

Mick Proud – tri-athlete

'I wholeheartedly recommend Teesside University Sport Science Service. The whole experience was fantastic with first class support prior to my test so that I knew exactly what to expect on the day. The testing facility was superb and the environment was relaxed, welcoming and ultimately professional. The testing process was straight forward and once the preliminary tests were out of the way the work began

After the test I was briefed on my initial results - I found this really helpful - it was excellent to get this feedback immediately. Within 24 hours I was emailed the detailed testing report with a full explanation of my results. I was encouraged to get in touch with the department to discuss any aspects of the results. After studying my report I had an extremely informative exchange relating to my training regime and was encouraged to get in touch if I had any further queries or required more information. I now feel supremely confident that each training session is being performed in the correct training zone - any ambiguity has been removed thanks to the physiological assessment provided by Teesside University. It's a first class service and an invaluable asset for athletes of all abilities'

World-class facilities

Our facilities at Teesside University are world-class. We have three exercise laboratories, fully equipped for all measurements of fitness. Whatever your sport we are able to test you on equipment specific to your activity – including running, cycling, rowing and swimming. In addition to this, we have an environmental chamber which can be used to help athletes prepare for competition in harsh environments, and a hydrotherapy pool which is fully equipped with underwater treadmills which may be used in injury rehabilitation or for recovery from a tough training week.

Remove the guess work from your training

Not only do you receive a full report detailing your test results but we also highlight your strengths and areas for improvement, along with a prescription of training sensitive zones (speeds, heart rates) based on your results from the data we collect.

Relationship beyond the assessment

Our service does not start and stop on the day of your assessment. We work with you before the assessment to understand your expectations and goals of your visit. We want to help you get the most out of your assessment and offer ongoing support with your training.
