Research expertise

The criminology staff have a varied range of research interests including drugs, youth crime, domestic violence, criminal justice and penality. These are reflected in numerous publications in books, journals and research reports for bodies such the Home Office and the Joseph Rowntree Foundation. Research expertise also informs all our programmes.

Work experience

Our students can complete their time at Teesside not just with an honours degree but also certificated work experience. We have many criminology related volunteering opportunities available. Students have worked for youth offender teams, the probation service, and the police victim support service - to name but a few.

Student support

We pride ourselves on the level of support we offer. When you enrol you are allocated a personal tutor to guide you through your study. All tutors have dedicated times for student appointments so you can discuss your work on a one-to-one basis. Students are given a University email account and are entitled to unlimited on-campus web access.

During the first year we emphasise study skills so you learn how to use all our extensive facilities such as electronic journals, virtual learning environments and computer programmes. This is built into the module Images of Deviance so the focus remains criminological.

We offer a wide range of option choices which reflect the expertise and research interests of the staff including - drug use; sex offenders; race crime; domestic violence; youth crime; policing; punishment; crime prevention; imprisonment; victims of crime; rape and sexual assault; crimes of the powerful; and American criminal justice.
