Practical degrees

There's a large range of courses at HND, foundation degree and undergraduate degree level, with routes tailored to specific interests, including coaching, exercise, performance, therapy and psychology.

Most degrees have vocational elements tailored to particular areas of employment and give you the chance to acquire academic knowledge and practical skills in your chosen area. You can also take an additional coaching placement module and put your knowledge into practice in a school or sports club.

It's an honour ...
Alan Smith

Alan Smith, Master of Science, former international and England football physiotherapist

“The University of Teesside has made a considerable contribution to the education of people from a variety of age groups and backgrounds. The excellent facilities and quality of lecturers give students the very best possible opportunity for successful academic achievement.”

Our excellent learning resources and high level of student support, together with student progression and achievement, scored top marks in the Quality Assurance Agency review. Research and professional practice informs each course. The enthusiasm and commitment of academic staff was highlighted as a particular strength by the QAA. Current research interests include exercise and over-training, exercise and psychological well-being, cardiac rehabilitation and children's attitudes towards physical activity.

Cutting-edge facilities

Our £6.5m complex for sport - the Olympia building - has expanded the teaching and research facilities available to our students. The state-of-the-art centre includes biomechanics, physiology and data analysis laboratories.

The cutting-edge sport science facilities we offer also include an environmental chamber to test performance. The chamber can simulate almost any environment on earth with temperatures ranging from +40°C to -20°C and humidity levels between 5% - 95%. It is used for athletes and individuals to experience extreme environmental conditions and help in acclimatisation for events and challenges. The chamber can also be used to test clothing, equipment and occupational tasks in extremes of temperature in a scientifically controlled environment.
