About Ellen Bissell

Ellen studied at Teesside University for both her Undergraduate and Postgraduate studies – Public Relations and Marketing Management respectively. She had so many positive experiences at the University that she has continued her studies here in the role of a PhD researcher. After completing an MSc, Ellen worked in the tourism industry for 18 months before becoming part of the teaching team at the university. Ellen’s research is titled ‘Place-making Through Place Marketing: Contestations between Middlesbrough as Brand and Middlesbrough as Place’. The aim of the research is to identify the locally lived relationships that create Middlesbrough and to compare these with the marketing strategies designed to place Middlesbrough as a global brand in order to uncover convergences and divergences that either support or hinder the development of Middlesbrough as a sustainable place to invest and live.

Currently she teaches on the Undergraduate Research Methods module as well as various marketing modules and is the Undergraduate Dissertation and Business Project Co-ordinator. She supervises both Undergraduate and Postgraduate projects, all of which she thoroughly enjoys.
