Senior Lecturer in Work Based Studies

About Kevin Ions

Kevin worked for over 10 years as a lecturer in computing in the Further Education sector before joining Teesside University in 2003 as a Small to Medium Sized Enterprise (SME) Specialist. In this role he worked on several European funded projects that assisted businesses to adopt Information and Communications Technologies to improve their business efficiency and profitability. Additionally, he project managed European Social Funded and Northern Way funded projects that delivered demand-led, flexible learning opportunities in a range of topics to businesses.

In 2008 Kevin joined Derby University as a Workforce Development Fellow designing and developing bespoke Higher Education Work-Based learning programmes for industry. Kevin returned to Teesside University as a Senior Lecturer in Work-Based studies in 2011 where he has been involved in the design and delivery of HE work-based learning programmes including the Work-Based Studies and BA (Hons) Management Practice programmes. Kevin teaches on a range of full-time and part-time Undergraduate and Postgraduate Business Management programmes.

Kevin achieved a Doctorate in Education from Durham University in 2016.

Research interests and activities

Kevin’s doctoral thesis was on “Mapping the development of professional praxis of Higher Education work-based learners via a case-study approach” The study examined the role that reflection plays in developing learners’ professional praxis and developed a typology to support future Higher Education Work-Based Learning developments.

Kevin’s research interests are in organisational learning, Higher Education Work-Based Learning pedagogy and the role of emotion in learning.
