About Andrea Towers

Andrea Towers took an unconventional route to becoming a lecturer, but her journey has transformed her into a real world expert in tourism and culture.
Andrea’s journey began when she left the UK to work as an au pair in Israel. After her contract ended, a keen interest in travel led her to a similar position in the USA, where she worked for five years.

In 1996, Andrea decided that she wanted to pursue her dream of travelling around the world. From America, she travelled to the UK; then on to South Africa, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, China, New Zealand and Fiji, before returning to the USA.

Following an accident in the USA, Andrea was left with little choice but to return to the UK. Whilst recovering, she enrolled on the  BSc Tourism Development Studies course at Sunderland University, which fitted perfectly with her expanding knowledge and interest in culture.

On completion of her degree, she was itching to start travelling again. From 1999 to 2002, she took part in the Japanese Exchange and Teaching (JET) Programme. She worked in Japan as an Assistant Language Teacher, teaching English to school children.

After the JET Programme ended, Andrea returned to the UK and once again studied at Sunderland University, this time for an MSc in Cultural and Heritage Tourism Development.

Andrea began working as a part-time lecturer at Teesside University in 2003, and started full-time in 2007. Currently, Andrea is the Programme Leader for the BA (Hons) International Management course and the BA (Hons) Tourism Management (Top-up) course. Her teaching covers a number of areas associated with these courses.

Andrea’s worldwide experience serves as an advantage to her teaching, and she can really relate to students wishing to pursue a career outside of the UK or a role involving international relations.

Andrea is a true real-world lecturer, and an inspiration to anyone with an interest in tourism, culture and travel.
