Keith Hurst

About Keith Hurst

Dr Keith Hurst did his psychology degree and PhD in psychology at the University of Leeds, and began lecturing at Hull University in 1999, moving to Sheffield Hallam University in 2001.

Dr Hurst is a Chartered Psychologist with the British Psychological Society (BPS), and an Associate Fellow of the BPS, and while at Sheffield held numerous positions including Programme Director for MSc Health Psychology. As a Principal Lecturer from 2007 he was responsible for the whole postgraduate portfolio and took a lead role in business development for the Psychology Subject Group. During 2009-10 he held two key roles for the Department of Psychology, Sociology and Politics, namely as the Business Development Lead and the Markets and Recruitment Lead, with responsibility for student recruitment, Knowledge Transfer (KT) and external consultancy.

Dr Hurst started as Assistant Dean in the School of Social Sciences & Law at Teesside University in October 2010 to provide a strategic lead for the Marketing and Recruitment portfolio, including taught UG and PG recruitment, and building the successful marketing of the broader offer – including WFD/CPD, Research/Enterprise and Consultancy. From August 2014 he led on Portfolio Development, with a focus on the merger with Teesside University Business School (TUBS).

Dr Hurst was appointed as the Associate Dean of TUBS in March 2016, and led the School during its 'virtual' relaunch in May 2016 and to the point of decoupling away from the School of Social Sciences and Law in summer 2016.  With the reestablishment of the Business School in its own right, and development of a full School Executive Team, he has taken on the Associate Dean (Learning & Teaching) brief.


Research interests and activities

Dr Hurst’s research and scholarly activity is related to his Knowledge Transfer work, with a primary interest in finding ways to help people engage with health enhancing behaviours, and avoid health compromising behaviours.

He has co-supervised two successful PhD students to completion, plus numerous MSc Health Psychology dissertations, and has worked as an external and internal PhD examiner. 

Learning and teaching interests

Dr Hurst has been involved in leadership roles for Learning, Teaching and Student Experience as well as Portfolio Development for more than ten years.  Latterly he led a major portfolio review of provision within Teesside University Business School - and developed a 'framework' of programmes at UG/PG level capable of delivery efficient growth and excellent learner opportunities for home and international students.

Enterprise interest and activities

Historically, Dr Hurst's Knowledge Transfer work was with the food industry relating to healthy food choices in collaboration with the Centre for Food Innovation (SHU), and he was instrumental in developing ‘Psychology Innovations’ – an offer about the psychology of creativity and innovation, and its useful impact in both commercial and social enterprise ventures.  Latterly, he has been interested in wellbeing and performance in the work environment - as well as career decision making.
