Work-based learning case studies

Major Lawrence Crabb

Major Lawrence CrabbBA (Hons) Work Based Studies (Leadership and Management)

I am thoroughly enjoying my work based studies route to a degree in leadership and management. The challenge of balancing work and higher education is not as demanding as I first thought because your learning comes from your experiences through work and life - the two are inextricably linked. The tutors understand individual situations and are flexible with the pace of study, allowing you to remain in control at all times. When you approach the finish line you get an excellent opportunity to take on a specific project that will improve or expand on an area of work that needs addressing.'

Phil Thorpe-Willett

Phil Thorpe-Willett BA (Hons) Work Based Studies (Business Management)

Phil, 45, from Redcar, is a Purchasing Contracts Manager for SABIC UK Petrochemicals at Wilton. His role involves sourcing and negotiating engineering site service contracts. Phil first joined ICI aged 16 as an apprentice and will mark 30 years service with the organisation in September 2008. He graduated with a first class BA (Hons) Business Management.

Phil said: ‘I’d previously studied for a Certificate in Management and an NVQ in Purchasing and wanted to find some way of consolidating this learning into a degree. Then a friend who was studying History at the University told me about the negotiated learning scheme. This was ideal as it enabled me to do the degree over three-and-a-half years, when it would have taken longer. My previous learning was incorporated, along with modules run by the Centre for Lifelong Learning and some with the Business School.’

Achieving a first was a goal for Phil. He added: ‘I’m relieved and very chuffed to get a first. I thought ‘if I am going to do a degree at my age I’d like to get first class honours.’ I’m looking forward to my graduation ceremony and wearing the board and gown! My wife, Julie, and my Dad, Eric, will be my guests at the Town Hall.’

Andrew Bright: Inspector, Cleveland Police

BA (Hons) Work based Studies (Business Management)

Andrew Bright'I chose to study at Teesside because the opportunity to obtain credits for prior learning and professional work-based experience was just the springboard I needed to encourage me to take the first step.

Once I was on the course there was no looking back; I had a clear route mapped out to achieve my goal of graduation.

The Business Management degree not only reflected my experience and career path as a professional police officer but will benefit me in being considered for other managerial roles outside policing.

For anyone with prior experience or qualifications who wishes to fast track the early foundation stages of a degree this course is ideal.

It gives recognition for knowledge that may otherwise go unrecognised formally within the workplace. The staff are accessible, supportive and friendly and your study path can be tailor-made to suit your domestic and professional circumstances.'

Debbie Booth, Day Nursery Manager

BA (Hons) Work Based Studies (Leadership and Management of Early Years)

'I am finding the course very fulfilling. I never thought I would be completing a degree at the age of 49, or at this stage of my career. It has certainly improved my practice as I find I am more aware of what I do and am continually reflecting on my actions in order to make my nursery the best it can be.

Clare Smith, Children’s Centre Manager

BA (Hons) Work Based Studies (Leadership and Management of Early Years)

When I first started I did not have any confidence walking into University, now I feel so much more confident. The course has been good for me as it has kept my mind thinking about ways to improve practice. The lecturers have been amazing; they are knowledgeable yet created a comfortable and informal environment while encouraging my development. The modules are relevant to my work and increase my awareness of other theories linked to early years.
