Law, criminology and criminal justice research unit
Co-directors Dr Ray Arthur and Dr Philip Whitehead
The law, criminology and criminal justice research unit provides a focal point for crime related research at Teesside University. Members undertake research in a number of areas including:
- organised crime
- crime prevention
- policing
- drug policy
- youth crime
- the probation service
- penal policy
- crime of the powerful
- sexual violence
- criminalisation and illegal markets
- criminal law
- criminal defences.
The work of the unit combines a strong focus upon policy relevant research with a significant contribution to key theoretical debates within law, criminology and social science in general. Methodologically the unit's expertise covers the full range from ethnographic field studies to quantitative research methods, the secondary analysis of large datasets and archival qualitative data, and evaluation of research methods.
The unit members have between them published over 60 books, journal articles and book chapters on a wide variety of law, criminological and criminal justice topics.
The unit brings together contemporary practice based research and critical policy analysis with an awareness of historical and social context. A common concern of members of the unit is to analyse how the meaning of law, crime, policing and criminal justice is embedded within changing local, national and international, historical and cultural contexts.
Members of the unit have strong links with other institutions and organisations, both domestically and internationally. The research outputs of the unit are aimed at academic, policy and practitioner audiences. This research has also had a significant input into course design throughout the school.
