Vice-Chancellor and Chief Executive

Professor Graham HendersonProfessor Graham Henderson became Vice-Chancellor of Teesside University on 1 April 2003.

Prior to that (from February 1999) he was Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Development) at Teesside with responsibility for the strategic development of the University’s academic portfolio. This included learning and teaching, quality and standards, library and information systems, lifelong learning, the development of collaborative partnerships and the personnel and staff development work of the University.

Professor Henderson was awarded the CBE in the 2011 New Year Honours list for his outstanding services to higher education, both for the contribution he has made within his own institution and to higher education nationally. He was appointed as a Deputy Lieutenant of North Yorkshire in 2012.

He is a Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society (FSS), a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA) and a Companion of the Chartered Management Institute (CCMI).

Professor Henderson started his academic career in 1975 at Nene College (now the University of Northampton). He then spent 17 years in Newcastle Business School at Northumbria University (including eight years as Deputy/Assistant Director of School) before becoming Director of the Business School at the University of Sunderland.

During his period as Vice-Chancellor, Teesside has gone through a process of rapid growth and development, including Teesside becoming the first modern University to win the Times Higher Education University of the Year Award in 2009/10. Turnover has doubled in six years and student numbers have risen from c.12,000 when he took up post as Vice-Chancellor to 30,000 in 2011.

In addition to his role as Board member of a number of University companies, Graham is a member of the Board of Universities UK, the Council for Industry in Higher Education and the Leadership Board of Tees Valley Unlimited. He is a Council Member of the North East Chamber of Commerce (NECC), Chair of the Common Purpose Tees Advisory Group and Chair of the Leadership Foundation for HE Membership Advisory Group. He is also a member of the HEFCE Strategic Advisory Committee on Leadership, Governance and Management, and a member of both the UUK’s Employability, Business and Industry Policy Network, and Student Quality and Participation Policy Network.

Graham is a Trustee of the Captain Cook Birthplace Trust and a Patron of Community Campus, a social enterprise with a mission to reduce youth homelessness and provide opportunities for people across Teesside and Hartlepool.

Professor Caroline MacDonald

Professor Caroline MacDonaldDeputy Vice-Chancellor (Partnerships & Standards)

Professor Caroline MacDonald joined the University in February 2009.

She began her academic career studying molecular biology at the University of Glasgow, where she later completed a PhD in Biochemistry. A lectureship and senior lectureship at the University of Strathclyde followed and she maintained links there as a Visiting Professor following her move to the University of Paisley as Head of the Department of Biological Sciences and then Assistant Principal with responsibility for Research and Commercialisation.

In 2004 she joined the Executive team at Glasgow Caledonian University and during her time there, she had responsibility for planning, widening access, community engagement, articulation and links with Scotland’s colleges, the student experience, and learning and teaching. In addition to her full time role at Glasgow Caledonian University, Professor MacDonald was a member of the Board of Management of Glasgow Metropolitan College. She was also a member of the Scottish Higher Education Enhancement Committee from 2007 to 2009, and she chaired an International Benchmarking Project on Supporting Student Success.

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Partnerships & Standards) at Teesside, Professor MacDonald is responsible for the development and oversight of the University’s partnership work with colleges and schools, for the international development of the University and for student support. She is also a member of the Corporation Board of Darlington College, a Governor of South Tees NHS Foundation Trust and a Governor of Thornaby Academy.

Professor Cliff Hardcastle

Professor Cliff Hardcastle joined the University in 2007 having previously been employed as Dean and Assistant Principal at Glasgow Caledonian University. He also worked at the University of Westminster and Newcastle Polytechnic, and has been Visiting Professor at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology University, Australia.

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research & Business Engagement), Professor Hardcastle is responsible for leading the development of the University’s research strategy. He also directs enterprise and knowledge transfer work using the University’s skills and expertise in support of business and industry. He leads work on DigitalCity, the major regional regeneration project, and is also responsible for the University’s strategies on higher level skills (workforce development).

Professor Eileen Martin

Professor Eileen Martin joined the University in June 2010.

Professor Martin is a former healthcare professional with a background in education, nursing, midwifery, intensive care and public sector management. Her areas of expertise relate to health service workforce planning and issues, organisational development and culture change - including the formulation and implementation of corporate strategy, relationship building, change management and the establishment of effective multi-disciplinary teams.

Professor Martin was previously Pro-Vice Chancellor at the University of Central Lancashire, focusing on teaching and learning, the student experience and UK partnerships. She had corporate oversight of higher education developments on the Burnley campus, and held additional responsibility for the public affairs agenda. Before this, she was Pro-Vice Chancellor/Dean of the Faculty of Health and Social Care at Central Lancashire. This role carried responsibility for the University’s health and social care strategy, for management of the Schools of Nursing and Caring Sciences, Public Health and Clinical Sciences, Dentistry and Social Work; and for strategic engagement with the major public sector organisations interfacing with the University.

As Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Learning & Student Experience), Professor Martin is responsible for developing the University’s academic portfolio, the overall student experience and learning environment, the library and information services and student services. She leads work on University bursaries and scholarships, developing the student recruitment strategy and also leads work in relation to the University’s corporate communications, including marketing, public relations and corporate development activity.

Morgan McClintock

University Secretary and Clerk to the Governors

Morgan McClintockMorgan McClintock joined Teesside University (then Teesside Polytechnic) as a Principal Lecturer in 1983, and was appointed as Secretary, Registrar and Clerk to the Board of Governors in 1989. In addition, Morgan has Executive responsibilities for the Departments of ICT Systems, Quality and Governance, Campus Facilities; and Student Records & Information.

The wide remit of Campus Facilities includes developing the campus, utilising space and enhancing the learning environment.

Morgan’s current external priorities include assisting the Vice-Chancellor in integrating the University’s development plans with those of Middlesbrough Council.

Alan Oliver

Alan OliverExecutive Director ( Finance & Planning)

Alan Oliver joined the Teesside University (then Teesside Polytechnic) in 1989, having previously worked for the Cleveland Police Authority and Middlesbrough Council. He was appointed Director of Finance in 1993.

As Executive Director (Finance & Planning), Alan is responsible for leading and overseeing the financial management of the University and for financial planning, monitoring, reporting and control. He has strategic oversight for University’s work on value for money and collecting tuition fees, allocating University budgets, statistical returns to the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) and the Higher Education Statistics Agency, and liaising on finances with HEFCE and various agencies, including the region’s Strategic Health Authority.

Juliet Amos

Juliet AmosDirector of Human Resources

Juliet Amos joined Teesside University in 2006 having previously worked at Northumbria University as Assistant Human Resources Director. Juliet is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development and an Executive member of Universities HR, responsible for a continuing professional development programme for human resources staff at all levels across the higher education sector.

Juliet leads the human resources strategy and management at the University including staff planning and reviews, reward and recognition initiatives, the HR Advisory function, occupational health and safety and all equality and diversity work relating to staff. She is also responsible for the provision of staffing information to inform Executive decision making and the statistical returns to the Higher Education Statistical Agency.
