Can I stay in University managed residences for my second year?
All rooms in our halls are reserved exclusively for first year students. If you need help to find accommodation please call into the accommodation service (first floor of the Student Centre).
How do I apply for University managed housing?
Our houses accommodate either three, four or in some cases five students. You need to have a group to share with. Leave your contact details with the accommodation service we will send a list of properties as soon as it is available.
I would like to move from my current accommodation. What should I do?
Call into the accommodation service to discuss your requirements. We have specialist staff on hand to give appropriate advice and guidance.
Where do I pay my rent?
If you have chosen to pay by invoice, rather than by direct debit, you need to call at the Finance Office (ground floor of Middlesbrough tower) with your payment.
I have found alternative accommodation and want to cancel my contract. What can I do?
You can’t cancel your accommodation contract. If you are not happy in your accommodation we can try to move you into other University managed accommodation. There is a £50 administration charge for this.
If you want to move into accommodation that isn’t controlled by the University, you need to find a suitable replacement to take over your contractual obligations. If you don’t find a suitable replacement, you will be charged rent until the end of the contract period or until a suitable replacement is found.
How do I report repairs?
You need to call into the accommodation service to fill in a maintenance report form. We will then arrange for someone to do the repair.
Can I leave my belongings in my room over Christmas and Easter?
Yes, the room is yours from the start of term in September until the end of the contract period in June.
I am in a University managed house and I have locked myself out. What do I do?
If it is during office hours, call into the accommodation service and we will contact the landlord on your behalf. Outside office hours, contact the landlord directly on the emergency number supplied in your housing booklet.
I am leaving my course. What do I need to do about my accommodation?
You should call into the accommodation service to let us know that you are leaving the course. If possible, bring your copy of your student withdrawal form.
You need to return keys for University managed houses to the accommodation office during office hours. Keys for University managed residences must be returned to the caretaker’s office at Parkside hall which is staffed 24 hours a day.
Once you have withdrawn from your course, you aren’t entitled to remain in your University accommodation. You have to vacate your accommodation and return your keys within 48 hours of withdrawing from the University.
After I leave at the end of my contract when will I get my deposit refunded?
Once all the accommodation is unoccupied, we start the final inspection process. For University managed residences, estates and University services staff do a joint inspection and supply charges for any damages. With University managed housing, our final inspection reports are sent to the relevant landlords for comment. We need receipts for any of their charges.
We try to process the deposits as quickly as we can, but the sheer volume means that we are unlikely to make refunds before August.
Am I entitled to a refund on my TV licence?
If there are three full calendar months before the TV licence expires, you are entitled to a refund for the unused quarter.
