English language support

What do I need?

You need to have a good level of English language as our courses are delivered and assessed in English.

Our English language support is voted the best in the UK (International Student Barometer 2013).

English language requirements

Here are the minimum entry levels required to study your course. For some countries we accept local exams rather than these tests. Please look at your country webpage for the relevant details.
Country-specific information

If you do not have the required English language entry level, you should attend a pre-sessional English language course before you start.
English language support before you start

Our English language requirements are listed below. If you have taken other tests, contact the International Admissions Unit for advice as to whether your test is acceptable.
Note: we can't accept certificates from private language schools as evidence of your English language level.

Important visa information – changes from 6 April 2015

Most students must take a secure English language test (SELT) before a visa is issued. Following a review of Home Office’s requirements, from 6 April 2015, the only Secure English Language test approved for UK immigration applications is IELTS, taken at an approved centre either overseas or in the UK. Trinity Integrated Skills in English tests taken at an approved centre in the UK will also be accepted.

Please note: some centres allow students to take UKVI or non-UKVI Secure English Language Tests. Please ensure that you take the approved test.

If you took Pearson PTE (Academic), Cambridge English or Trinity Integrated Skills in English ISE II on a date before and including 5 April 2015, your scores can be submitted as part of your UK Immigration application up until 5 November 2015. This includes visa applications for pre-sessional English language courses.

The university will accept these tests and TOEFL iBT for admission to programmes at degree level and above subject to undertaking an interview on Skype (or equivalent).

In addition to achieving the overall score, you must obtain a minimum score in each band of the test. This applies now.

For degree level and above, the minimum band score must be:

  • IELTS - 5.5 in each band

For tests taken up to and including 5 April 2015, submitted with applications until 5 November 2015

  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) - 51 in each band
  • Cambridge English scale - 160 in each band
  • Trinity Integrated Skills in English ISE II - Pass in each band

For courses below degree level, such as pre-sessional English, foundation programmes and HNDs, the minimum band score must be:

  • IELTS - 4.0 in each band

For tests taken up to and including 5 April 2015, submitted with applications until 5 November 2015

  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) - 36 in each band
  • Cambridge English scale - 140 in each band
  • Trinity Integrated Skills in English ISE I - Pass in each band

The table below sets out the University’s current requirements which may be adjusted in due course. However, to obtain a visa you will need to meet the Home Office requirements as well.
