It started with a gift...
Alumni scholarships
For centuries scholarships have changed lives and brought opportunities to people who might not otherwise have had them.
Until recently the majority of people simply couldn't study for a degree. Thankfully those days have passed, but the need to provide opportunities and change lives is still here.
At Teesside our scholarships and bursaries do just that. Our It started with a gift... scholarships are awarded to students who display academic or sporting excellence, who come from areas or regions with low participation in higher education, or who face a genuine financial barrier to continuing their studies. Our scholarships transform lives and open up positive futures for the young people who need them most.
Our scholarships and bursaries are not fee waivers or loan repayments - they are used to pay for the cost of living or for equipment and resources.
We take great pride in the way that our alumni have taken our It started with a gift... scholarships appeal to their hearts. Together we can continue the centuries-old tradition of changing lives by identifying and encouraging talented young people.
The James Caldwell Scholarship
Named in honour of Professor James Caldwell, a former professor here at Teesside University, who generously gives £2,000 a year to fund a PhD student. The scholarship is only awarded to a Teesside graduate so Professor Caldwell is making sure that his donation is benefiting the region. The first James Caldwell scholar is Satish Shewhorak who is studying how to instil emotional interactivity to animated characters featured in dynamic crowd scenes.
When Satish discovered that his PhD is being sponsored by Professor Caldwell, he was inspired by the generosity. He said: ‘Professor Caldwell has made an amazing commitment to reinvest in Teesside University and its community. I’d love to meet him in person to thank him. One day I would like to repay his generosity to the next generation.’
The Mackenzie Thorpe Scholarship
World renowned artist and honorary graduate Dr Mackenzie Thorpe returned to Teesside University to exhibit his Middlesbrough Murals - his first exhibition in the very centre of Middlesbrough. All proceeds from the event are being used to institute a scholarship which will provide financial assistance to a Teesside student who displays outstanding artistic talent and potential.
