Students gunning for glory at Commonwealth Games

09 July 2014

Two Teesside athletes have been undergoing their final training preparations at the University before joining their England teammates for the Commonwealth Games.

Aimee Willmott and Karina Le Fevre, who are both on the Elite Athlete Scheme at Teesside University, are set to compete in the event, which is taking place in Glasgow from 23 July to 3 August.

The pair both receive specialist strength and conditioning support and training during their studies as part of the Elite Athlete Scheme.

International swimmer Aimee, who competed at the London 2012 Olympics, secured a fifth place finish at the previous Commonwealth Games in Delhi, but is confident of clinching a medal this time.

'I’m pretty excited about the Games,' explained Aimee.

'As with the Olympics two years ago, it is a home event so the atmosphere and support is going to be fantastic.'

Aimee, 21, is studying BSc (Hons) Sport and Exercise (Coaching Science) and will compete in the 400m individual medley, 200m butterfly, 200m individual medley and 400m front crawl.

She added: 'Being on the Elite Athlete Scheme here has really benefited me. The team here has an incredible amount of knowledge about what it takes to compete at an international level. My strength has definitely improved as a result and I am confident of bringing home a medal this time.'

Aimee and Karina, both students within the University’s School of Social Sciences & Law, will meet up with the England team in London on Sunday 13 July for a week long training camp before heading to Glasgow for the event.

Karina, 20, who has just completed the first year of her Law degree at Teesside, will represent England at table tennis in the singles, mixed doubles and women’s doubles.

She said: 'I was at Delhi four years ago where the team came fourth, so we are hoping to go at least one better this time and secure a medal.

'The scheme here at Teesside University has been great for me. It has allowed me to train alongside other athletes and receive individual support and feedback on all aspects of my preparation.'

The Teesside Sport Elite Athlete Scheme offers a comprehensive support package including physiotherapy, sport psychology and sports science support to athletes of international calibre.

Matthew Wright, Sports Development Officer at Teesside University, said: “It will be great to see two of our students representing their country at the Commonwealth Games.

'Aimee and Karina have worked extremely hard and I hope the support and training they receive here will give them an additional boost and help them in their respective sports. Everybody at Teesside University wishes them the best of luck and we look forward to welcoming them back, hopefully as medalists, to develop them even further.'
