Students from Teesside University’s School of Arts & Media and School of Computing created two films which achieved awards in the student category of the Royal Television Society’s Regional Awards.

The third film, Addicted to Sheep, which was made with support from Teesside University, was presented with best Non-Broadcast Factual Award.

Addicted to Sheep was made by Magali Pettier and Jan Cawood, who were both part of the DigitalCity fellowship programme supported by the University.

Their film documents the life of Tom and Kay Hutchinson and their three children as they carry out the remote, challenging work of sheep farming in Forest in Teesdale, County Durham.

Magali said: 'Winning the award was a pleasant surprise. To be recognised by the television industry is a real achievement for all the people involved, including my co-producer Jan Cawood and editor Matt Dennis, and for those who supported us along the way.'

The Student Animation Award went to Domareen Fox, creator of Dresslocked, a 2D animated film exploring body dysmorphic disorder through the struggle of a young woman who can’t decide what to wear in the morning.

The Student Factual Award went to BA (Hons) Television and Film Production graduate Jing Zhao, who produced the film Eat, then wait for the night.

Filmed on location in China and set against the backdrop of Chinese New Year, this film explores loneliness and the importance of family in China, examining the themes of loneliness, loss, family and connections between people.

Dormareen and Jing will now both go forward to the Royal Television Society’s National Student awards to be held in London later this year.

The regional Royal Television Society awards, held in Gateshead and presented by BBC presenter Steph McGovern, also featured a tribute to BBC Tees presenter and Middlesbrough FC fan Ali Brownlee who died in February.
