Why did you choose Teesside University?

I visited Teesside University when I was at secondary school and thought the facilities were excellent; the people were friendly and it felt like a great place to be. I was aware of its growing reputation as one of the UK’s top universities – I’d heard a lot of success stories about Teesside University in the media.

How has Teesside University prepared you for your current role?

Teesside University, particularly Dr Amy Smith, helped me obtain the placement, by providing CV advice and interview preparations. This guidance was invaluable in starting my career. The placement allowed me to use the theory I had learnt in a real work environment, helping tremendously during my final study year where I could relate many issues to real working examples. Following a successful placement SSI UK offered me a part-time contract during my final year before starting full time in my current role. My time at Teesside University helped massively in preparing me for my career - the course is real and very much linked to practical business situations. Modules are varied and cover wide aspects of the business environment.

And what does your current role involve?

I have been working in the communications department at SSI UK for two years where my role involves helping to develop, implement and manage site-based communication plans. I’m responsible for developing strong relationships with the site and departmental managers helping to deliver the business’ communications strategy and key messages. I also regularly audit, manage and suggest ways to improve all communications channels employing examples of best practice and the use of new technology. My other responsibilities include brand management and producing site-based communications – newspapers, bulletins, and team briefs.

What are your ambitions for the future?

My immediate focus is to establish myself in my current role. I think I will be well placed to look for career development opportunities within SSI UK or the wider business world, whilst I am also considering additional qualifications.
