'To wear that cap and gown when I graduated was a joy.'

Marie Cunningham

What brought you to study at Teesside University?

I came here as a mature student, having left school at 15 and had an interesting education from the school of life. My daughter suggested that the course would increase my self-confidence.

What was the course like?

It was daunting at times – I had never sat an exam, or been in an academic environment for many years. I am glad I stuck at it – to wear that cap and gown when I graduated was a joy, and helped me with my confidence.

What are you doing now?

I am self-employed, running classes and workshops to promote wellbeing to people who would like to be more in control of their health, happiness and life in general. I have published two books, and have also started a charity to get my work out in the community.
