What made you choose Teesside University?

The main reason I chose Teesside University was because of the first-class dental facilities.

How did your course prepare you for your career?

The University helped prepare me for my career with the theory behind dental hygiene and dental therapy concepts and the clinical aspects in the phantom head laboratory. I was able to put my skills into real-life clinical practice, gaining work experience in the University’s student dental facility and on seven different placements.

Did you receive any scholarships or funding from the University?

I was one of the first recipients of the Student Experience Fund. I used my funding to complete a dental placement in India, providing voluntary dental care in schools and orphanages. I am extremely grateful to the University – the placement enhanced both my clinical and interpersonal skills and abilities. I gained experience in a very unusual and challenging setting which I believe helped make me a better dental therapist. My experience in India was a truly enriching and unforgettable one, which developed me professionally and personally. The Student Experience Fund is a great initiative which provides access to fantastic opportunities such as this.

Where are you working now?

I work at Coxhoe Dental Practice as a dually qualified dental hygienist and dental therapist. My main duties include periodontal and restorative treatments, taking impressions and radiographs. I’ve also completed a tooth whitening course which extends my scope of practice as a dental therapist. In the future I would like to become an orthodontic therapist. I would eventually love to own my own dental practice.
