MA Human Resource Management

What are you doing now?

I work full time as the medical staffing manager for Tees, Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust, which means that I do the human resources for all doctors. I have a team of five direct management reports who deal with all the recruitment of doctors and then supporting them whilst in post.

My role is to manage the team on a daily basis, liaise with doctors of all levels from junior doctors through to consultants. I deal with sickness and disciplinary cases as well day-to-day queries at a senior level.

How has your degree helped you?

Doing the MA has certainly helped me progress in my work, as it’s given me more confidence. It has helped to give me a real understanding of the human resources work in which I’m involved on a daily basis.

What challenges did you face?

Combining a full-time job with part time study at Teesside University was hard work. I had contact time for one afternoon and one evening each week which I really enjoyed, as well as plenty of study at home. It was a bit strange going back to the classroom and I did wonder at first whether I’d be able to do it.

I wasn’t really sure what to expect and did initially doubt myself, but the staff at Teesside were so supportive and the other people on the course were great. I’ve met some lovely people who will be lifelong friends.

The tutors are extremely approachable and ready to help and the facilities at the Business School and library are great. It was good to know I had these resources at my disposal even when I was studying at home.

What are the rewards?

At the time I attended university it was purely to gain a qualification to supplement the work I was already doing in my day job. However, since getting the qualification this had led me into two new jobs. I can honestly say without my master's degree I would never have got the current job I have, so this has really benefited me in the long term.
