Michael was mentored throughout his dissertation, which resulted in a piece of work of which he is immensely proud, and which gained him the Cleveland Police Prize.
BSc (Hons) Crime and Investigation
'The course gave me an excellent understanding into the role of the criminal justice system as a whole.'
Why did you choose to study at Teesside University? And why did you select your chosen subject?
I initially wanted to join the Police, so I wanted to go to a University that was involved in training police officers. Teesside has trained Cleveland and West Murcia Police and also had researchers working in Africa in regards to Policing. The staff all had working experience and the facilities were fantastic. The crime scene house, crime scene laboratories and learning facilities were exactly what I wanted.
What did you enjoy most about studying at Teesside University?
My favourite part was the actual learning. I really enjoyed the course and would recommend it to anyone who wants a greater understanding of a number of different criminal justice areas.
How did your time at University help prepare you for your career?
I was urged to contact the local Probation Service to enquire about volunteer opportunities. When I graduated I continued working for the Probation Service voluntarily, then volunteer with Raleigh International in Borneo for three months.
Whilst in Borneo I constructed a community hall, church and gravity water feed system. I also trekked in the Jungles of Long Pa’sia for two weeks covering 120km. This provided me with the life experience that I had lacked when applying for jobs.
And what is next for you?
My experience has taught me to be adaptable in regards to your career. I have recently been accepted on an Integrated Masters course in Mental Health. After that, I may pursue work in a hospital, community, criminal justice, prison, private or military environment. I enjoy new challenges and mental health nursing gives you that on a daily basis. I also plan to eventually return to Raleigh volunteering as a Project Manager either in Borneo, Costa Rica or Tanzania.
