Free lecture aims to explore young people’s mental health

30 May 2007

How do health professionals recognise and respond to young people’s mental health problems? These and other related issues will be the focus of a free public lecture at the University of Teesside on Wednesday 6 June.

The University’s Professor in Public Health, Janet Shucksmith, pictured, will deliver the lecture, entitled ‘Mad, bad & dangerous to know? Issues in recognising and responding to young people's mental health problems and concerns.’ The lecture will take place in the University’s Centuria Building, off Victoria Road at 6.30pm til 7.45pm. Refreshments will be available from 6pm.

The lecture will explore what has been seen as an alarming increase in mental health problems in the child and adolescent population. Conditions from anorexia to self-harm, and from depression to ADHD have become of concern not just to parents and young people themselves but also to those working directly with them.

Professor Shucksmith will explore:

  • Whose responsibility it is to promote good mental health of young people
  • How professionals’ roles must change to ensure that ‘every child matters’
  • Whether young people, from the most successful to the most vulnerable, feel supported and able to access appropriate services.

The lecture will be of particular interest to young people, parents and those working with young people in a variety of settings. There will be an opportunity to ask questions at the end of the lecture. The lecture is free of charge and is open to all.
