A healthy review for the University

02 April 2009

The University's annual Nursing and Midwifery Council quality assurance review has yielded excellent results.

The Reviewers visited a variety of practice placements, had meetings with students, practice mentors, Heads of Service, Programme Leaders and reviewed databases and documentation.

The grades applied by the reviewers are: Unsatisfactory, Satisfactory, Good and Outstanding. The results for the School of Health & Social Care are:

  • 'good' in all of the five key risk areas, with no conditions or recommendations. The risk areas are; quality and effectiveness of practice learning opportunities, resources including support for students, safeguards to monitor students' conduct throughout the programme, students’ fitness to practice, education provider’s quality assurance systems.
  • retaining the two 'outstanding' grades achieved in 2008 for medicines management and tripartites
  • achieving two further 'outstanding' grades in the areas of fitness for practice and practice learning.

In addition, the School was commended by the review team for the commitment, enthusiasm and energy shown by practice mentors and academic staff.

Professor Paul Keane, Dean of the School, said: 'We are particularly delighted with the two new 'outstandings' which endorses the mission and philosophy of the School of Health & Social Care. It is a requirement that we now publish in the relevant professional journals and media, the practices which led to the achievement of these two new 'outstanding' grades.

'I would again like to thank our service colleagues and University staff, who through our excellent working partnerships, have enabled us to realise this wonderful achievement.'
