81-year legacy from CSI to Teesside University

27 July 2011

The Cleveland Scientific Institution (CSI) has generously made a donation worth £48,000 to Teesside University.

Over 81 years ago CSI was one of the local organisations who donated towards the establishment of Middlesbrough’s Constantine Technical College which became Teesside University.

The donation to the School of Science & Engineering will go towards: • short industrial placements for undergraduate students from the school in local engineering companies • scholarships • continuing to award a range of academic prizes at the University’s annual graduation ceremonies in November.

These will all start to take effect in the next academic year, beginning in September. CSI, who were formed in 1923, has also donated prizes to the School of Science & Engineering at Teesside’s graduation ceremonies for the last 18 years.

Keith Bell, President of the CSI, said: 'We are delighted to make this donation to Teesside University. We have a very long standing positive relationship with the University and trust this will continue in years to come.'

Alan Rodger, CSI’s Honorary Treasurer and Secretary, said: 'We already gave prizes to the school. Now this donation enables us to continue supporting industry and commerce in the community through the industrial placements.'

Additional new opportunities for our students Professor Simon Hodgson, Dean of the School of Science & Engineering, said: 'This donation is fantastic. It will enable us to begin to offer a host of additional new opportunities for our students that otherwise would not have been possible.'

Dr Paul Shelton, Assistant Dean in Educational Partnerships in the School, added: 'That the Institution is still supporting the University after 81 years is tremendous.'
