Teesside University to tackle changes in education

15 March 2013

Two innovative Teesside University initiatives are taking place in the coming weeks to help teachers cope with the changing demands of education.

The Government recently highlighted concerns about inadequate computer programming in schools and many teachers are retraining so they are able to offer programming in their classes.

In response to this, Teesside University is launching a bespoke 10 week computer science course for teachers.

The part-time course, which will run on Wednesday evenings between 5.30pm and 8.00pm, starts on 17 April. It is primarily aimed at teachers who need the knowledge and confidence to teach computing and computer science at GCSE.

Joanne Marwood, Senior Business Development Manager at Teesside University, said: 'The University is always looking to meet the demands of a wide range of professional industries.

'This bespoke computer science course is particularly relevant at a time when computer programming in schools is high on the Government’s agenda. Although the course is primarily aimed at teachers, you don’t have to be a teacher to take part. You may just have an interest in computer science and would like a more robust grounding or perhaps you are considering teaching in the future and understand that the entry requirements for the computer disciplines have changed.'

In addition, Teesside University is set to welcome a renowned national leader in education for a special event on 26 March titled ‘we’re all in it together: putting children first in a new educational landscape’.

Malcolm Reeve, Chair of the Federation of Leaders in Special Education and the National Director for Special Educational Needs and Disability at the Academies Enterprise Trust, will be the keynote speaker at the event.

Malcolm will share aspects of his personal career journey and will explore some of the current challenges facing the education sector, including the difficult decision facing some schools regarding academisation.

We’re all in it together is aimed at teachers and education professionals and also offers workshops on a number of topics including creative behaviour management and computer science.

Sharon Powell, Principal Lecturer in Education in Teesside University’s School of Social Sciences & Law, said: 'We are proud to be using the expertise at the University to engage with the wider teaching community in order to address some of the changing demands of working in education. We are also delighted to be able to welcome somebody of the stature of Malcolm Reeve who, I am sure, will be an inspiration to people within the profession.'
