Teesside University’s Leadership Accelerator Programme was designed in collaboration with industry partners to help talented employees develop their managerial skills to allow them to achieve their personal and career goals.

Over the course of two years, the 18 learners worked on a variety of specially-tailored modules in subjects such as self-management, human resources and performance management, communication and critical thinking. They also reflected on changes in their behaviours using a mixture of coaching, facilitated Action Learning Sets, receiving support from their company mentor and through the completion of a journal.

At the conclusion of the course, the learners gave a presentation about how the Leadership Accelerator Programme had benefitted themselves and their employers.

The two year course was developed alongside a number of leading companies in the region’s engineering and manufacturing sector, including SABIC, Lotte Chemical, Sembcorp, Huntsman, Cordell Group and CF Fertilisers UK.

It was designed to give current or aspiring managers the leadership and management skills to advance their careers.

The Leadership Accelerator Programme has proven so successful that a second cohort is currently underway and there are also plans for future courses.

Teesside University was a finalist in the Provider of the Year category in the national Cogent Science Industry Skills Awards for its work developing the Leadership Accelerator.

Five graduates from SABIC took part in the Leadership Accelerator. SABIC Training Manager Craig Hargreaves said: 'It’s fantastic to see how all the graduates have developed over the length of the course.

'The Leadership Accelerator Programme has been incredibly successful with all the graduates gaining great value from it.

'They have come an extremely long way in a relatively short space of time and it has helped them to be much more focused and given them the skills to lead teams.'

Laura Woods, Director of The Forge, Teesside University’s business hub, said: 'At The Forge we’re committed to working with industry to deliver the skills and training that their workforce needs.

'The Leadership Accelerator Programme is a fantastic example of how we have worked with our partners in the private sector to identify a need for a particular type of training and delivered tangible results.

'We are delighted to see how the Leadership Accelerator Programme has provided fantastic benefits for both the graduates and their companies.'
