National recognition for entrepreneurial spirit

Teesside University has been recognised nationally for the strength of its work to embed entrepreneurship among its students and graduates.

The University has been shortlisted in the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards in the University Entrepreneurship category.

Finalists were chosen from hundreds of businesses and organisations that entered or who were nominated across 18 award categories.

Teesside University is committed to placing enterprise at the heart of its activity. It has invested in infrastructure to support enterprise within businesses of all sizes and sectors. Entrepreneurial support for start-ups is provided by a dedicated programme and team at Teesside Launchpad, there is an innovation centre for digital companies looking to scale and grow, the Student Futures Programme works with the business community to deliver its needs with graduate talent and Entrepreneurs@Tees, a University wide programme to encourage engagement in entrepreneurial activity, has seen over 6,000 students involved.

In addition, The University recently launched its new Centre for Professional and Executive Development (CPED) at its Darlington campus to help meet the North-East’s demand for thousands of skilled jobs.

Teesside University also holds a Queen’s Anniversary Prize for Enterprise and Business Engagement.

Professor Jane Turner OBE, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Enterprise and Business Engagement) at Teesside University, added: 'To be shortlisted for the University Entrepreneurship award is recognition for the tremendous commitment we give to entrepreneurial activity at Teesside University.

'We continually strive to ensure our students realise their potential during their studies and beyond graduation. The University has an excellent track record for entrepreneurship – through on campus business support, Teesside graduates have launched over 400 new businesses, creating more than 600 jobs.

'There has been a dedicated approach to ensuring that enterprise skills are a vital part of University provision, and we have set in train and delivered a long list of successful projects, programmes and societies to support our academic offering and enable students, graduates and stakeholders to hone their entrepreneurial skills.

'Entrepreneurship and business engagement will continue to be at the centre of Teesside University’s ambitious, forward-thinking plans.'

All businesses shortlisted for the Lloyds Bank National Business Awards will have to give a presentation in front of an expert panel of judges and winners will be announced at an awards ceremony in London on Tuesday 14 November.
