Philanthropists who have supported Teesside University students through prize donations and scholarships have been thanked for their positive contribution to the student experience.

Teesside University offers 10 different philanthropic scholarships and prize funds which are currently supporting more than 110 students and graduates.

To celebrate donors’ contributions, recipients of scholarships and prizes were invited to a special event in The Curve at the University’s Middlesbrough campus where they were able to meet with donors and thank them for their assistance.

Students were also able to share their success stories and also talk with donors about the positive impact the awards have made on their studies.

James Williams received a Dr Ken Home scholarship which awards local engineering undergraduates £5,000 to support them during their studies.

He said: 'It was fantastic to get this award and the financial support it brought.

'As a graduate, if you’ve been able to work on a placement and put that on your CV, you’re already more competitive in the job market.

'This scholarship enabled me to complete a placement in Bristol, which will hopefully help me when it comes to finding work. The scholarship keeps talent in the local area in a field which is relevant to the industries on Teesside.'

Dr Home is an honorary graduate of Teesside University, who attended Victoria Road School in Middlesbrough and studied at Constantine College and went on to found K Home International Ltd., a multidiscipline engineering service.

He said: 'I went to school here in Middlesbrough and studied at the old Constantine College. Since that time, I’ve started my own business and been reasonably successful and I felt that I really wanted to put a little bit back into the community. 'I particularly want to help young engineers, as that was my background. The aim of the scholarships is to make life a little bit easier for people and perhaps make a bit of difference as to whether people can come to Teesside University or not. It’s very important that we keep talent in this area.'

Dave Hudson, Director of Student Recruitment and Marketing, said: 'Our students are at the heart of everything we do at Teesside University.

'Through both our scholarships and prizes, we are seeing a real impact in terms of student success and also increased opportunities for students who had not previously considered higher education.

'We really want to thank everyone who has chosen to invest in our region and also in our next generation of learners and leaders.'
