What brought you to study at Teesside University?

I chose Teesside because my research indicated that it offered the best games development course.

What was your course like?

The best thing about my course was that I worked alongside my fellow students in modules such as Journeyman and Advanced Games Development where teams would make demo versions of a game set by tutors. We also had motion capture sessions where we created animations for our game during development of that module. It was great to get feedback on my work.
The module I enjoyed the most was my final year project. I highly enjoyed this because it gave me the most creative freedom.

Did you do an industry placement?

I did a six week placement at a local studio called R8 Games Ltd. My lecturer contacted me on LinkedIn to see if I would be interested. At the time Teesside University were running summer internships and I was lucky to do a placement that was funded by the University. I thoroughly enjoyed it and it gave me experience of working in a racing game developer environment - without it I don’t think I would have secured my current job.

What was your social life like when you were studying at Teesside University?

During the first few weeks of University I would spend most of my spare time at social events. Once I got settled into my course I was much busier with my University work however I did go to the odd event at the Students’ Union. I also joined the University football team and was a member of The Gym.
I became friends with the majority of people in my accommodation and ended spending my second year with some of them. The accommodation couldn’t have been any closer to where my lectures were.

Did you receive any financial support from Teesside University?

I received a bursary from Teesside for achieving my expected college grades, which was a massive bonus. I also received a £1,500 bursary which was spread over three years, that helped a lot.

Did you use any of the University’s support services such as the careers service?

Yes, without the University’s careers service and constant LinkedIn sessions, I wouldn’t have had a CV that would have impressed industry professionals.
Before I graduated I attended several interviews and in the end I was offered a contract at Playground Games as an Environment Artist, all which I accepted just before graduating.
