Why Teesside University?

I wanted to go to university to expand my knowledge and gain the skills needed to work in accounting. I also wanted to experience new things and gain some independence.

I live in the Teesside area so found out about Teesside University through my college and some of the outdoor advertising. I’m invested in my local area and would love to peruse a career here so it made sense to study here too.

Why accounting and finance?

I always enjoyed maths at school and college – I loved that there is only one correct answer and that it’s the same in every country. I chose this particular course as it lined up with the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants qualifications, which meant that I’d be working towards a degree as well as being a member of one of the accounting professional bodies.

I’m one of the course representatives for accounting and finance which is great – I get to feedback the thoughts and opinions of my fellow students to the course leader.

Best thing about your course?

The best thing about my course is the variety of subjects; it covers lots of different aspects of business to give you the bigger picture. I’ve loved all of my modules, each one is completely different and interesting yet they all link together when applied in the business world.

Tell us about the campus

Teesside University campus is full of brilliant facilities. The library is a great place to study and it caters to everyone’s needs, whether you need to hire a room out for a group project, or you need to go to the silent floor for independent study.

Did you receive any funding/scholarships?

At the start of the year I received a £1,000 kick start bursary and have now been lucky enough to have been chosen for the Peter Atherton Scholarship in my second year.

Do you have a good social life?

I’ve lived in Teesside all of my life and I love the area. I don’t get to go out much when it’s exam time but I always manage to make time to study and do things with my friends and family.

Have you been on any work placements?

I’m about to go on a placement year with Enterprise Rent-A-Car. I’ve secured a position as a management trainee and I’m really looking forward to being able to apply what I’ve learnt in my first two years into a practical working environment.

Would you recommend Teesside University?

Yes I would recommend Teesside University to others, and I would also recommend the course as I have really enjoyed my first two years studying here.

What are your hopes for the future?

After graduating I hope to secure a graduate position in a company where I can complete the rest of my professional exams to become a fully qualified chartered accountant working in the finance sector.

This course has given me exemptions from some professional body exams so that when I graduate I won’t have many left to do. It also allows me to keep my options open, so I can think about which professional body I want to be a part of.
