Fees and funding

Invest in your future

We can tell you the price of a degree - but that's not the same as its value. You really can't put a price on turning your dream into reality.

The key changes to student finance for new students

  • Universities and colleges can charge tuition fees of up to £9,000 a year
  • Tuition fee loans will be available to eligible students to cover the full cost of fees
  • Non-repayable grants for general living costs will increase to £3,354 for students from households earning less than £25,000 and partial grants will be available to students from households with incomes up to £42,611
  • Universities will offer a wide range of non-repayable scholarships and/or bursaries
  • You don't start repaying your student loan until you earn more than £21,000.

Scholarships

We are offering over 700 National Scholarships - as well as Teesside Extra Scholarships worth up to £2,500 cash.

Best new university
Students in the Athena Building

We are the UK's best new university for student experience (Times Higher Education survey 2011).

  • Teesside University tuition fees for full-time undergraduate degrees starting in 2013 cost between £7,450 and £8,450 a year - these tuition fee prices depend on if your course is classroom or laboratory based. All fee information is on each individual course.
  • Full-time foundation degrees, HNDs and other qualifications below degree level at both the University and partner colleges cost £5,500 a year.
  • Sandwich placements and study years abroad cost 15% of the tuition fee charged for an ordinary year of the programme.
  • Fees for international students are £10,450 for full-time undergraduate courses.

  • Don't pay any fees if you're an NHS student - you are funded differently. Your course is covered by the NHS.

Living costs

  • Living costs cover things like accommodation, food and travel costs - these vary depending on where you study. Remember, living in Middlesbrough is more affordable that many other places.

  • Teesside Extra: See if you are eligible for one of our Teesside Extra scholarships - this is worth up to £2,500 cash.
    More about Teesside Extra scholarships
  • National scholarships: Benefit from a national scholarship of a £3,000 fee waiver in the first year. Your household income must be below £25,000.
    More about National Scholarships
  • Tuition fee loan: Apply for a tuition fee loan to cover the full cost of your fees each year.

  • Maintenance grant: As a full-time student you may be entitled to a grant of up to £3,354 towards living costs such as food, accommodation and travel. You get the maximum grant if your household income is £25,000 or less, or a partial grant for household incomes between £25,001 and £42,611. A grant doesn't have to be paid back.
  • Maintenance loan: Top this all up with a living costs loan (also known as a maintenance loan) if you need to. Again, you pay it back when you finish your course and earn over £21,000.
  • Repayments: Pay back your student loan (tuition and maintenance) when you are earning over £21,000 a year. Repayments will be 9% of your income above £21,000, so the amount repaid each month depends on how much you earn. If you earn £21,500 - currently the salary of a newly qualified teacher - you initially make repayments of just £3.75 a month.
  • Social work bursary: If you are a social work student you can apply for all of the funding listed above in the same way as other students, however you may also be entitled to a social work bursary from the NHS in year 2 and year 3 of the BA (Hons) Social Work course. Further information about the social work bursary can be found at www.nhsbsa.nhs.uk/Students/825.
  • NHS students: you may be eligible for a non-repayable, non-means-tested grant and you can apply for a means-tested non-repayable bursary.

  • Other forms of support: you may also be eligible for other forms of support that don't have to be paid back.
