International Summer School 2015

09 September 2015

Students from China come to Teesside for a three week Summer School.

From 26 July to 15 August, Teesside University welcomed a group of 35 students from China to participate in an intensive three-week Summer School in the School of Science and Engineering. The group included students and staff from Anyang Institute of Technology (AIT) and North China University of Water Conservancy and Electric Power (NCWU), both in Henan Province, China.

The two institutions, which have established relationships with Teesside University, sampled the engineering and science programmes and learned about the good practices used by our academics. The trip was also an opportunity for our visitors to improve their English language skills and visit inspiring educational and touristic landmarks in the UK.

Jiashen, a student from Anyang Institute of Technology, commented “It has been a nice experience, it’s a very nice university and all our students love it! We also like the climate here, we don’t mind the wet weather. My English pronunciation has improved very much. In my college I always made grammar and pronunciation mistakes. But everyone speaks English at Summer School so you have to speak English too, so I have improved. Learning a language is like building a house, you need a strong foundation. I have a foundation now and I am expressing myself in different ways. I will definitely speak English much better when I am back in my country.”

Dr. Keith Brown, Director of International Development at Teesside, said ‘"We were delighted to host a student group from China again this year. It’s a fantastic experience for the students, who get the chance to learn what it’s like to study in a UK university whilst practising their English language skills. It’s also great opportunity for us to showcase our facilities and the high quality of our teaching staff and student support. We hope many of the students will return to Teesside in the future to enrol on degree programmes here.”
