Teesside University hosts visit from International Pacific University (IPU) Japan and IPU New Zealand

09 July 2018

At the beginning of July, Teesside University hosted a visit from International Pacific University (IPU) Japan and IPU New Zealand.

The visit was led by Minoru Kasuya, who is former Chief Executive of IPU New Zealand, current Chairman and CEO of the Japan-based Education Research Foundation, and an independent member of the Advisory Board to Prague College – one of Teesside University’s partner institutions.

Mr Kasuya met with Vice-Chancellor Professor Paul Croney and Pro Vice-Chancellor International, Dr David Bell, to discuss exchange, research and opportunities for joint courses in subjects such as physiotherapy, sports therapy and rehabilitation and business. He also completed a programme of tours and meetings with academics in Teesside’s School of Health and Social Care and School of Social Sciences, Humanities and Law.

IPU established its first campus in New Zealand in 1990, as one of the first private tertiary institutions with degree-granting authority in the country. The University opened a second campus in Japan in 2007, which has become a leading university in Western Japan region in the few years since its establishment.

As a result of the visit, there are plans to open up student exchange opportunities in Sports Therapy and Rehabilitation and Physiotherapy for Teesside University students from April 2019, at the IPU Japan campus.

Mr Kasuya said “My visit to Teesside was very fruitful. There are many opportunities for our two institutions to work in partnership, and look forward to the realisation of the opportunities we discussed.”

Dr David Bell, Pro Vice-Chancellor International, said: IPU is an institution which shares Teesside’s global vision and ambition. We look forward to developing a relationship with them which will offer mutual benefit to our students and enhance their international experience.”
