Teesside hosts an international political lecture

07 October 2002

Influential political commentator Professor Noam Chomsky is to deliver a ‘virtual lecture’ at the University of Teesside on Friday 11 October. For Professor Chomsky is actually delivering his lecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Boston, USA, and it will be relayed simultaneously, via video conferencing, to a range of international venues. These include a dozen international Universities, such as the University of Edinburgh, the University of Maastricht in the Netherlands, and the University of Teesside.

The free lecture will explore the current political situation in the Middle East, mainly in Israel and Palestine. It will take place in the Large Lecture Theatre, Ground Floor, Centuria Building, Victoria Road, Middlesbrough from 7.30pm-9pm. There may be an opportunity to ask Professor Chomsky questions using video conferencing on the night.

The lecture is hosted by the University’s ‘Modern Studies: History Research Group’. Peter Smith, a former Principal Lecturer in Politics at the University will Chair the lecture. He said: “This is truly an international lecture and an exciting educational and political opportunity. Professor Chomsky is a leading critic of American foreign policy, including the Vietnam and Gulf Wars, and his book on the events of 11 September 2001 was a rapid sell out. The timing of the lecture could not be more perfect. We hope that members of the public will take this opportunity to come and see this legendary academic.”

Schools & Colleges who wish to attend the lecture can contact Peter Smith on 01642 553856.
