Free talk on Child Protection on the Internet

11 October 2002

The issue of child protection and the Internet will be explored at the University of Teesside on Monday 14 October 2002 at 6.30pm. Entitled Child Protection on the Internet, the free lecture will be delivered by Senior Lecturer Alisdair Gillespie in Room A1.007 on the first floor of the University’s Clarendon Building on Southfield Road, Middlesbrough.

An active member of the Home Office Internet Task Force on Child Protection, Alisdair helped to design the recent cinema advert which warned young people about the potential dangers of Internet chat rooms. The advert featured the voice of a young child on the Internet which turned out to belong to a middle-aged man.

The Internet Task Force on Child Protection was formed last year. Its remit includes examining the laws relating to child protection, leading to the Government accepting the need for new legislation which should be considered in the coming Parliamentary session.

Alisdair said: “The lecture will detail some of the dangers posed to children by the Internet. Cases and stories over the past two years have illustrated the dangers from child pornography, grooming over the Internet and the growth in child procurement. I will also talk about the proposed new laws and how they will be implemented.”

The lecture will be of particular relevance to law enforcement agencies, child protection agencies and other voluntary sector agencies who work with children. Parents and other members of the public are also welcome to attend.
