University of Teesside holds lecture on the existence of alien life

Professor Sir Arnold Wolfendale will deliver the second of the free lectures celebrating ten years of university status at the University of Teesside, on Wednesday 27 November 2002 from 6.30pm to 7.30pm.

Professor Sir Arnold Wolfendale, Fellow of the Royal Society, Emeritus Professor of Physics of the University of Durham and Honorary Doctor of Science of the University of Teesside will talk on Are we alone? The search for intelligent life. His free lecture will take place in room OL1, Europa Building, Woodlands Road, Middlesbrough. It is open to all members of the public with refreshments being served from 6.00pm.

Sir Arnold Wolfendale said: “Are we alone in the Universe? is one of the great questions of the age, and one which everyone has a view. I will look at the history of this question, and the science involved in the present day searches for intelligent life. My aim is to interact with the audience and provide the situation to debate the issues raised and to find out the answer to the question Are we alone?”

Sir Arnold Wolfendale was the fourteenth Astronomer Royal (1991 – 1995). He has played an important national and international role in the development of astrophysics and astronomical research. His extraordinary contributions to both fundamental scientific research and to science organisations in the UK have naturally earned him many distinctions including a number of honorary degrees, lecture awards, medals and other honours. He was awarded an honorary DSc from the University of Teesside in 1993.

This special series of free lectures feature a range of speakers, including Honorary graduates and Visiting Professors, with the next in the series being the former Bishop of Durham and Honorary Doctor of Literature David Jenkins on Wednesday 4 December
