New Vice-Chancellor's global vision

01 April 2003

THE Vice-Chancellor (Designate) who takes over the reigns at the University of Teesside on Tuesday 1 April, 2003 has global ambitions.

He is Professor Graham Henderson, who joined the University of Teesside as Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic & Development) in 1999 after two years at Sunderland University, where he was Director of the Business School.

He says he is “immensely proud and greatly honoured" to be appointed as Vice-Chancellor and follow in the footsteps of Professor Derek Fraser, the University's Vice-Chancellor since 1992. "Derek Fraser transformed the campus and did an outstanding job over the last decade to create a dynamic, thriving modern University in the heart of Middlesbrough," Professor Henderson.

"My appointment comes at a significant time for the future of higher education and I am looking forward to working with our talented staff and students and our many partner, both in the region and on the national and international stage. My vision is to make the University of Teesside one of the most innovative in the country and develop its growing reputation for excellence in key niche areas like Health and Computing around the globe. We already have links with many countries, including exciting new developments with Malaysia and China - but we need to get the message across that we are an international university," says Professor Henderson.

Professor Fraser, who retires on Monday 31 March, said: "Graham is immensely talented and I am sure he will do a great job as Vice-Chancellor. He has the drive and ambition to take the University forward on the national and international stage while also making sure we remain true to our reputation as one of the leading universities for widening participation."
