Teesside student joins big apple Marathon for UK children

06 June 2003

University of Teesside student Nkosana Mpofu is aiming to run the New York Marathon in November, to raise money for the charity Get Kids Going! He aims to raise £900 for the charity, and is looking for local sponsorship.

Nkosana, 38, is a former information officer with the British Council in Zimbabwe. He has already achieved a Master of Science degree in Multimedia Applications from the University, and is now studying at Teesside for a mental health qualification.

Veteran runner Nkosana has previously completed the London Marathon and races back home in Zimbabwe, where he raised funds for drought relief, an old people’s home, a children’s home and the Matebeleland AIDS council. Nkosana said: “I’ve been running for 18 years, I enjoy keeping fit and meeting up with other runners. I get such a sense of fulfilment from running which can benefit others, and I’m really looking forward to raising money for Get Kids Going!”

Away from the running track, Nkosana also composes Zulu poetry, and is in the process of recording a poetry CD with assistance from the University. Interested sponsors can contact Nkosana on 07979570031, or e-mail nkosanampofu@hotmail.com
