Asian festival live on the web

14 July 2003

The University of Teesside is making Middlesbrough’s Mela, the annual celebration of Asian culture, available to all by operating a live webcast of the entire event, including a live skydiving webcast.

The University’s Community Informatics Research Applications (CIRA) team will be broadcasting the best of the Mela live on the Internet on Sunday 20 July from Albert Park. The website address is www.radioriverside.co.uk

The Radio Riverside Roadshow, at the park’s Visitor Centre, will show live footage from Mela and from the RAF parachutist's ‘helmet-cam’ as he descends on Albert Park.

Steve Thompson, CIRA Community Media Co-ordinator, said: “The webcast is a great way of bringing the Mela to everyone. We’ll be using moving and still images to show the event at its best and let everyone, in any country, see what is happening as it happens. The Webcast will be managed by a team of volunteers from various local community groups, the Mela Organisers, and Media students from the University and Cleveland College of Art and Design.

“Visitors at the Mela could also find themselves up on the Roadshow’s big screen and the Internet too.”

Sights and sounds from the Mela, including the skydiver, can be enjoyed again during Stockton Riverside Festival in the Arc, Dovecot Street, Stockton, from Thursday 31 July to Sunday 3 August.
